Judy Marchand is a member of the Okanagan Indian Band, located in Vernon, BC. Judy has been a frontline worker for over forty years. In knowing the importance of health of self, family and community, Judy chose a career in health. Judy?s starting point was in high school as a candy striper, later achieving a diploma in psychiatric nursing in 1970 and working in a mental health hospital for ten years. In 1980, Judy became a Community Health Worker working on reserve. During this time, she has learned self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation, patience, focus, setting goals and learning how to navigate within the environment. By seeing other Aboriginal People succeed in health careers, she believes many may be encouraged and inspired to pursue the health field. She welcomes the chance to work with and motivate Aboriginal people and communities in a culturally sensitive manner so that they are inspired to take better care of their health. Judy is a strong advocate for ensuring that Aboriginal People have a voice concerning better and equal access to health services to improve health and healing. ?If a person is interested in their own wellness and they want to be the best they can be in terms of mind, body, spirit and emotions, if they want balance and a sense of purpose, then a health career is a good route to go.? |
